Un abrazo y Feliz 2016, A hug and happy 2016,
CHAPTER
1
BY
CANDLELIGHT
Realizing our destiny, we looked at each other
without barely speaking. The crackling
sound of the wet branches, while burning, after that heavy snowfall, and the
neighing of horses from the howling of the wolves, distracted our minds and
drove away our fears. In the background,
behind the pine trees, a huge male Iberian lynx cautiously watched our
movements.
— I see you deep in thought, Antonio — I said, trying to calm him down.
— I see you that way too — he said, very
self-absorbed, without even looking up.
— Think positive, try to remember! We have been in worse situations and still,
here we are, why would it be different this time? I remembered past situations.
— Damn it Manolo! Because because there is a
helicopter flying over us! Because our
friends have been kidnapped! Because we will lose everything that we have
gained after so much fighting! … I'm
sorry. But at least I know to not think
positive under these circumstances.
— Have confidence Antonio, I've got everything
planned and besides,
That! — I
said pointing at the top of the hill, the lights of the Shrine of Our Lady of
Cabeza — has always protected us, and today, with more reason. It is also because of Her, that we are here.
— I know! Do not believe that I do not think about
it. Even if it does not look like it, I have not lost hope. But there are so
many things, that you better believe that I get the feeling to just give up
once and for all. If we rescue them it is bad! And if we do not, it is worse! — He said, and without removing his gaze from
the candle, he offered me a sip of whiskey to warm up.
— Antonio, don't.
Don't get confused! Nobody said
this would be easy, but I see this just the opposite as you do. — I was trying
to encourage him, fearing that his discouragement would get to me.
— If we rescue them, we will certainly lose the legacy,
but in return we will have saved their lives; otherwise, they will die, but it
will remain in our possession. In either
case, we will have gained and lost something, look at it that way! — I did not think it was appropriate to
remind the lives that our ancestors had to sacrifice, when they had been in the
same situation in which we are now.
The so many hours on horseback and the worries made
the long quiet journeys our best company; they were the feed that brought forth
my most intense memories, those that were grafted onto my heart, marked the
prints of a difficult road to a destination known only by God. In such a long day, I had time to think about
the long talks with my father, in the reasons for the labors of my mother and
brothers; in the true friends and in the unfulfilled loves, and most
importantly; in how the circumstances and luck can combine, in spite of us, to
compose the sweetest melody or the most bitter of songs, even simultaneously.
— How could I have foreseen what would later
happen? What could have been my
fault? — I thought, remembering my first
day at the bank, while moments, people and places went through my head during
the last year of my life. — I had so much excitement —, and I could not even
yet imagine what I was getting into. Thereafter would come the
"tsunami" of crooks, of which I would only be a collateral victim:
the mafia, the whores, the drug dealers, the corrupts and treacherous, etc.,
even the Church!
— If at least I could recover her, I swear I'd
settle for whatever the outcome would be
— I was praying without consolation looking back at the Sanctuary.
While I was thinking of that, a deafening noise
emerged from the impenetrable undergrowth, until it almost perched upon the
tops of the pines. Its powerful bulb
blinded us, leaving us helpless, in front of a stronger and more powerful enemy,
that by the moment weakened our devotion. We had resolved to fulfill the
agreement, but we wondered, will they?
What if all this was not real?
What if it was just a bad dream?
Would that also be brought by my imagination?
My life, my love and everything for what I had
struggled since I could remember, were hanging from a fragile thread that
seemed about to break. Within minutes we
would conduct the exchange and my questions would be answered thus ending the nightmare
that began a year earlier.
